Best Time to Visit
Unlike most cities, planning here is smartest based on avoiding public or school holidays, rather than weather. There is really no bad time to go seasonally so plan around events, otherwise pick weekdays in non-vacation times for the masses.
What to Pack
Loose clothing works year round with a light jacket for evening, but be sure to keep valuables close and out of sight – the city has a reputation for pickpockets. Hats and sandals will keep you comfortable, the colorful city isn’t as dressy as Paris.
General Tips
Visitors may feel they are walking within a real-life painting when visiting Antoni Guadi’s Park Guell, but the city also contains a wealth of indoor museums too, mostly dedicated to works by Catalonian artists.
The National Museum of Art of Catalonia is the standout, containing works dating back over 700s year in Romanesque style, while the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art represents post-war creations. Other essentials are the Can Framis, and artists specific Picasso, Fundació Joan Miró, and Fundació Antoni Tàpies museums.
As well as the Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house and Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall, the city has a thriving modern music scene that gathers for two major European festivals, May’s Primavera Sound and June’s 3-day Sonar. Barcelona International Art Fair is now known as BCN Art and takes place in December, while the contemporary-focused Swab opens in October. A video art fair, Loop runs late May into June.
